The Living Room

A new patient space for the new Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Cancer Centre

Part of the European Healthcare Design Award 2017 winning art program

The Living Room comprises of bespoke bamboo furniture, all designed and built in-house. The furniture has special embedded speakers which provide distinct zones of ambient sound. This means that visitors sitting within a couple of meters of each other can be hearing completely different soundscapes. The calming soundscapes are driven by a bespoke app, which uses real time weather information to produce sounds representative of those that would be heard at that exact moment of time in locations both in the UK and around the world. Each sound zone has a small screen to indicate where the sounds are located and the weather conditions at that precise time.

The project required careful consultation with various stakeholders throughout the design process and had to be both designed and constructed to meet the exacting standards required within a hospital. BAT Studio met and exceeded this challenge to achieve spaces of a quality rarely seen in a hospital environment.
